My husband Tom and I have spent the last ten years bringing up our family; in the beginning it was tough with many long sleepless nights. The pressures and responsibility can be just unbearable!
Only getting two to three hours sleep a night?
We’ve all been there. It’s no wonder that we mums lose touch with reality now and then, your probably only getting two-to-three hours sleep a night…you’re frazzled! And with all of life’s new responsibilities it’s hard to deal with everything else going on around you. You need to establish good baby sleep patterns from the outset.
In the beginning it seems impossible.
I had my first baby when I was eighteen years old. I was just a young mother my self… I did not know what I was doing. My baby was constantly crying, I couldn’t get him to sleep. Everything was unbelievable difficult, I thought this was all supposed to be so natural; I expected my precious little bundle to arrive pre-programmed! but instead had never ending babies sleep problems.
Ten years later I still believe that having children is the biggest miracle ever, it’s the ultimate experience, more life changing that any thing else I have ever encountered! I love my children, which is why I decided to have more. The joy that they bring to our lives is something that I wouldn’t change for anything, every morning when they lift their sleepy heads from their pillows and smile at me I know everything is worthwhile and I can cope with all life has to throw at me.
But now I understand the importance of a good nights sleep…
Now I realize how important this is because Tom and I are getting the sleep we need to successfully live our lives, we’re all so much happier. Life has returned to normality – I think I remember what that is. It has reduced the stress of the whole family.
In the beginning it was a lot of trial and error – sweet and tears – usually mine, I read all the books on babies sleep problems, baby sleep patterns, went to all the classes, I tried it all… it has taken me ten years and finally now after three children I know how to get baby to sleep through the night without distress to anyone, what’s more its simple once you know how.
There is no reason why YOU cannot achieve the same…
I want to share my knowledge with as many parents as possible to empower you with the ability to create a healthy, happy, self-confident child. It never failed to amaze me how many health visitors have no children of there own and try telling you “its easy, just leave then to cry themselves to sleep, they’ll learn within a few nights” – if only they realized how strong that maternal bond is, and how painful that tug on your heart strings can be.
Getting your child to sleep every night requires everything to be right with you understanding the sleep patterns and when it is, the peace and tranquility is simply wonderful! You will suddenly become the mum you dreamt of being. Imagine all of the advantages a sleeping baby can provide –
Your baby is going to be sleeping a lot. During the first few months, your baby will sleep for most of the day. You may not get any real interaction, or reactions other than sleep and crying.
After a few months, your baby needs to be put on a standard routine. Usually this includes wind down time, bath, feeding, massage, and sleep. You can always use soothing music to help your baby sleep, or even stuffed animals that have the reenacted sounds of the wombs in their belly. Be sure to not place the stuffed animals into her crib, as that is dangerous.
SIDS and Baby Sleeping Bags
SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a syndrome in which an otherwise seemingly healthy baby suddenly dies in his sleep. There are things you can do to prevent SIDS. Always remember, Back to Sleep, place your baby on his back to sleep. Place the baby I well-fitted clothing and do not put any pillows, toys, or blankets into the baby’s crib. You can also put the baby in a Baby Sleeping Back, a garment that the baby wears and you zip up to keep the baby warm, without the fear of a baby covering his face.
Try New Things
Try different things and see which works best for you. Try the baby sleeping in your bed, bassinet, co-sleeper and crib and see which one the baby naturally adapts to. Then every week, you can try a new sleeping source and see if the baby will sleep in that.
Just because you have a new baby doesn’t mean you should not be putting effort into your marriage. It is still important to spend time with your spouse, both with the baby and separately. Talk, laugh, have fun, have sex, just enjoy one another.
Take in the advice of your doctors and your parents. You can read books on how to get your baby to sleep. Ultimately though, you are going to know what works best for your new little one. So relax and have fun. What may at times seem like a lot of work, to get your baby to stop crying and start sleeping, you will only experience for a while with your child. Just love them and enjoy these new adventures.

Handling Baby Sleeping Problems for Ages 3 to 12 Months
If your baby is more than three months old and currently experiencing difficulties in sleeping throughout the nighttime, there are steps you can start taking immediately to remedy the problem. You can get started by implementing the sleep training suggestions that are outlined below. The most important step you can take is to begin putting your baby to sleep at night while they are still awake.
This first aspect of aiding babies sleeping through the night may be difficult for you. This is because your baby will usually cry for the first few nights, and this can give you a feeling of guilt. Try to keep in mind that your baby’s crying will diminish every day, and soon everyone in your home will start getting a good night’s sleep. If the crying persists the first night then it’s still okay to go into the baby’s room and calm them by treating them as you normally do. Then, try again.
The First Few Weeks of Life – Infant Sleep Patterns
Typically, infant sleeping patterns during the first eight weeks of life call for 16 to 20 hours of sleep during every 24 hour cycle. Surprisingly, newborn babies cannot tell the difference between day and night. But newborn babies are still infant human beings, and they share our natural biological drive to sleep during the nighttime hours. Putting your baby to sleep at the same time each and every night will cause its sleep patterns to start changing. By being diligent with this simple process, your baby will soon be sleeping for longer periods by the time they are 8-12 weeks of age!
Babies Need to Learn to Self-Soothe
To aid babies’ sleep through the night, you must remember that you are not teaching them to sleep but rather, they are learning how to sleep. All relevant research into baby sleeping problems indicates that letting your baby fall asleep on their own is the most important step toward their learning to sleep through the night. This fact is confirmed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the specialty group whose job it is to help babies thrive. Numerous studies prove that to prevent baby sleeping pattern problems down the road, they must be given the opportunity to fall asleep on their own as an infant.
To Help Get Your Baby Sleeping Through the Night Give Them a Substantial Feeding
Week by week, your baby is maturing. By the time they are 10 to 16 weeks old they are less likely to wake up during the night expecting to be fed if they have eaten enough food before they go to bed. Helping your baby learn to sleep through the night requires that you give them a substantial feeding at the same time each evening, sometime between 10:00 and midnight. After their feeding, we recommend that you put them in their crib while they are still awake. Studies by leading researchers indicate that feeding babies after midnight can hinder their ability to sleep though the night.
Baby Sleep Patterns: Learning the Difference Between Day and Night
You can teach your baby the difference between day and night. This simply means that your home should be a stimulating place during the day, and a quiet one at night. At night, reduce the amount of noise and stimulation.
If your Infant is consistently allowed to soothe themselves back to sleep, to learn the difference between day and night, and given a late night feeding, 96% of you will have your Baby Sleeping through the night by 10-16 weeks of age.
